Class 1 Spring Term

These are some of the areas that your child will be covering this term.

-Literacy
This term we will be looking at a range of stories with predictable and patterned language.

-Writing instructions and having fun with pattern and rhyme.

-The whole school will be involved with a Poetry Day and I hope you will support your child to learn a simple rhyme or poem.

-Handwriting – correct letter formation.

-Listening to stories and rhymes.

-Using and understanding phonics to word build and to help with spelling.

-Reading in groups and individually ………enjoying books!!.

-Mathematics

-The term will start with the children counting, portioning and calculating with number.

-We will be covering number facts and understanding shape and data handling e.g. making simple graphs and pictograms.

-The children will follow practical activities to further their understanding of weighing and how to measure things.

-Science (knowledge and understanding of the world)

-Sorting and using Materials

-This term we finding out about and naming common materials.

-We are looking at the properties of materials and finding out where different materials come from and using vocabulary for describing and comparing them.

-The children will be shown how to test an idea and say what the result shows.

-We are linking this topic with Puppet making.

-Geography (knowledge and understanding of the world)

-A contrasting Locality

-Last term we looked at the local area around Landulph. This term we are making geographical contrasts with Saltash comparing the main features and amenities. Any pictures or postcards of Saltash that we could use in a display would be greatly appreciated.

-Poor Barnaby is sitting on our shelf desperate to go away on holiday with you but no one is requesting his company!!! He loves to come with you and have his photograph taken to share with the class so he can talk about where he has been and how he has travelled.

-RE (knowledge and understanding of the world)

-Special People.
This half term we are finding out about the special people who may affect our lives. eg doctors, nurses. firemen and religious leaders both past and present.

-Design Technology (Creative development)

Child with glove puppet-Making Puppets.
Mrs.Plumb and Mrs.Woods will look at puppets through the ages. They will look at different types of puppets and talk about the materials used to make them. (Linked to our science topic).
The children will then to design their own puppets following a simple design brief.

-After making their fantastic creations the children will be encouraged to evaluate them.

-Music (Creative development)

-The children this term will be exploring pulse and rhythm.
They will identify the beat in different pieces of music and join in at faster and slower tempi (speeds) and begin to internalise and create rhythm patterns.

-PHSE – Going for Goals

-This unit provides strategies for the children to become more accomplished learners. It will encourage them to think about how they learn and how they can influence their success.

-They will be introduced to problem solving processes and choosing the best solution and a simple understanding about setting themselves a goal.

-PE (Physical Development)

-The children will continue to develop their gymnastic skills through balance and control and they will be learning how to sequence their movements.

-The children will be shown how to use a word bank to create simple sentences to support their work.

-They will also be encouraged to use the computer to produce simple text on screen that is error free.

-There will be many opportunities for the class to use the Interactive Whiteboard across the curriculum.

In class two this half term we are learning about:

Literacy: For this term our focus will start with adventure and mystery. We will then move onto to performance poetry before finishing with report writing. (this will fit in with our project work!)

Numeracy: Starting with work on place value we will move on to revise and develop our skills with addition and subtraction. We will work on money problems and then develop our understanding of shape and space, looking at symmetry and the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.

ICT: We will be learning how to e-mail! Expect some interesting e-mails to arrive. Additionally, we will be learning how to research topics on the internet and how to format text.

Science: Our topic for the full term is forces. This is a big topic and we will be investigating magnets and springs together with friction, gravity and air resistance.
There will be lots of practical experiments which will be fun!

PSHE: We are looking together at change. We are exploring feelings of felling welcome and unwelcome. We will discuss rights and responsibilities and develop our own class charter. By the end of term we will have learnt strategies which will help us to join a new group.

Art: Our topic is drawing, we have drawn with soft pencils and we are now moving on to use different media such as chalk and charcoal. Come and see our art work in Class Two.

History: Our topic will be a local study and this will include the work of Brunel.

Geography: We are studying Settlements. We are looking at our local area and what makes a good settlement (rivers, roads, buildings, land…) We will be creating a mini settlement.

PE: There are two elements to PE. Mrs. Smith is working on our invastion games (football). As you may be aware we have some talented football players. Mrs. Selman will be teaching the children netgames.

RE: We will be learning about key characters in the Christian, Jewish and Sikh Faith. We will look at people who feel they have been given a job by God.

Homework: Please try and remind your child to keep up to date. Homework will be given out Monday’s and collected in on Friday’s.

Spring Term in Class 3

Film Narrative – Language is about communicating visually, verbally and through texts. For the first four weeks of the term we are exploring the visual. Film has its own rules and language used to describe its form, content and concepts. It is these which we will be studying in depth; camera, colour, characterisation, sound and setting to name a few.
Poetry – To link in with the school’s poetry week we are studying the use of imagery in poems; building from Year 5, children further explore the use of personification in other poets' work, and then use this experience as a basis for shared and independent writing of their own personification poems.

We will then be looking at writing narrative in the form of plays and persuasive texts in the latter half of the term.

Numeracy

As always we will commence the term by working on place value and counting and properties of number. We will then be looking at problem solving, multiplication and division, shape and space and the dreaded fractions!

Science

Earth, Sun and Moon – In this unit the children will learn about the shapes and relative sizes of the Earth, Sun and Moon. We will learn about how the three bodies move relative to each other and how these movements relate to night and day.

Separating Materials – Children will learn that solids which do not dissolve in water can be separated by filtering which is similar to sieving. They will also look at,

-making and testing predictions

-planning a fair test

-repeating observations and measurements and evaluating these

-representing data in line graphs and interpreting what these show

Making hats – we will look at hats through the ages; hats fit for specific purposes and then design a cloth hat for a specific design brief before evaluating our end product.

Music

Journey into Space – Mrs Bonner will work on extending the children’s sound vocabulary, including the use of ICT before composing a soundscape.

Graphical modelling – In this unit children learn to use an object based graphics package to produce images and visual models.

Exploring people – We are starting to look at the lives of Hindu’s and significant Hindu leaders comparing them to important figures in the Christian world.
